A Sweet Lady
Created by Christine and Charles 2 years ago
Sheila was a cousin to my husband Charlie's mother, Mary Somers McKelvey. Mary's mother, Priscilla Savage, married an American serviceman, Hall Somers, who was stationed in England during WWI. They moved to the U.S., where they raised their children, Mary and her siblings. Mary's mother took her to England in 1949 to meet her cousins, and Mary and Sheila became good friends. They corresponded over the years, and Mary always wanted to return to England to see her cousins again. So we arranged to take her and husband Edwin to England in 1994. Sheila and Wilf gave us a very warm, friendly welcome, and invited several other family members to their home so we could have a family reunion. The next year they accepted our invitation to come to the States to visit, and we got to hear their stories about the bus tour that they took through the Southwest before they arrived in Denver. They were so amazed by the incredible distances in America! After that we kept in touch with Sheila, and Charlie and I returned to England in 2004 to see her again (by then Wilf had passed). She was still the warm, sweet lady that we had met before, and made us feel completely at home. We saw her once more, when she was visiting her brother Bill and wife Jill in Canada, and we were there for a drum corps competition that our son was in. We all went to the competition, and she really enjoyed it. She was always so much fun to be with, as she had such a positive attitude about everything, and was friendly and warm with everyone. She loved her garden, and had a beautiful one in Oliver's Battery. And she loved her church, and spent many hours decorating the altar and singing in the choir. And she loved her children and grandchildren so much, and was so proud of them. We corresponded over the years via Christmas cards, and we always hoped to get back to England to see her again. Sheila was a lovely person, and will be missed. But now she is finally reunited with her dear Wilf.
